Desde Rancagua: Una cantante para los Estados Unidos
Silvia Soto nació y creció en Rancagua. Viene de una familia numerosa: Tiene siete hermanos, uno de ellos falleció. Ella tiene una gemela que se llama Gloria. Actualmente ambas están viviendo en Estados Unidos.
“Ha sido un proceso muy bello pero duro, porque siempre está esa cosita dentro de uno cuando está lejos de casa –¿Cómo sería mi vida si estuviese allá?–. Es una batalla constante. Imagínate, después de 17 años de estar fuera todavía extraño todo de Chile. Pero creo sinceramente que nuestra vida es un proceso, y uno decide su camino con las decisiones que toma, y yo he tomado la decisión de estar fuera de Chile. Vuelvo a casa cada año y medio, para recargarme con energía de mi tierra”, cuenta Silvia Soto. Su experiencia con la tierra “gringa” se remonta al año 1992, cuando viajó por primera vez. Su papá hizo el trámite de residencia. Todos emigraron. En ese momento, todo cambió. “Llegamos a vivir a una ciudad inmensa, con carreteras gigantes, todo limpio y lleno de reglas, de restricciones. A mis 15 años, venía con una educación súper diferente, en todo sentido. Mis notas, mis clases, mi comida, mi entorno”, recuerda Silvia, que en ese entonces no pensaba ser cantante. A los 18 años, Silvia fue a México a estudiar música. Estuvo ahí cinco años. “Esa fue una experiencia increíble, ya que la gente mexicana es maravillosa. Tienen unos corazones gigantes, y son gente muy cálida en realidad. En mi estadía en México crecí mucho, estuve siempre en el ambiente del entretenimiento musical. Fue sinceramente una parte muy importante de mi crecimiento espiritual y como ser humano”. Silvia volvió a Los Ángeles. Ahí estudió ingeniería en sonido. En esa época, conoció a su esposo, Michael Gleaton, un afroamericano. “Resulta que Mike era el dueño de una productora en Los Ángeles y terminamos casados después de tener a nuestra hija Imani Daniela. Viajamos con la familia de Michael a Chile, a casarnos espiritualmente junto a la mía, cuando Imani cumplió su primer año”, dice Silvia, que un año antes ya se había casado por el civil. Silvia se reconoce como chilena y, por supuesto, “orgullosa rancagüina”. Actualmente, sus días pasan parsimoniosos en su proyecto musical, que nace en el año 2007.
“Es un proyecto súper personal, el cual aún está en desarrollo. Mi música evoluciona de a poco, jamás dándome por vencida porque al final tengo toda una vida para estar aquí, y hacer lo que amo hacer”, comenta Silvia, cuya página web es www.silviasoul.net. El sonido de la banda Silvia Soul es una fusión deliberada de varios géneros de música, co-creado con un grupo de diversidad étnica de músicos.
Desde Estados Unidos describen el trabajo de Silvia como una fusión de latín, lounge, pop, jazz con tintes de flamenco y Bossa Nova. A esta rancagüina de corazón, aún le quedan cosas por lograr en las tierras de Obama.

Interview of Silvia Soul Music in a Chilean newspaper, published for their 97th anniversary.

Silvia Soto was born and raised in Rancagua. She comes from a family of 7 siblings, one of then passed away. She has a twin sister Gloria, both of them reside in the United States. “It has been a beautiful but hard process, because there is always that thing inside of us when living outside your natal country, I question “How would it be if I was there? How would my life be like there? – It is a constant battle. Imagine that I have been in the US for almost 17 years and yet miss Chile tremendously. “I sincerely think that our lives are a process and one decides its destiny with the decisions we make and I have decided to reside outside Chile. I go back every year and half to recharge myself with the energy of my roots, where I come from, says Silvia Soto. Her experience in the land of “Gringos” goes back to 1992, when she arrived to reside for the first time. Her father had submitted the papers to get their residency and as they went through the whole family moved abroad. At that moment everything changed, “we arrived to a country full of different rules, clean streets, big freeways, full of restrictions. When I was 15 in Chile was a different story, I had a really different way of education in all scenes. The classes, the grades, the food, my whole environment had changed” she reminisces. At the age of 18, Silvia moves to Mexico City to study music. “That experience for me was magical, Mexican people are wonderful and so warm and great heart. In my stay in Mexico I learned so much and grew spiritually tremendously. I was always surrounded myself with the people from the Entertainment industry, meeting many artists and this being my life style, truly a part of my life that helped me grow as a human being and internally”. She returns to Los Angeles where she studied sound engineering. At that time she meet her husband Michael Gleaton, an Afro-American. Mike is a producer/editor and owns his own production company in Los Angeles and they ended up married and had a daughter named Imani Daniela. We traveled to Chile with his family for our spiritual wedding which took place in Chile, this happened when Imani was 1 year” Silvia says but a year before married Mike in a Los Angeles Court house. Silvia conceders herself Chilean and proud Rancaguina. “I am actually working my new album, which starts in 2007”, she says.
“It’s such a personal Project, which is still being developed. My music evolves little by little, I never give up and never will because at the end I have a life time to do this, do what I love doing” she comments, her webpage is www.silviasoul.net The Silvia Soul Band sound is a deliberate fusion of various genres of music, co-created by an ethnically diverse group of musicians. Silvia’s music has been described as a mix of Latin jazz pop & funk fusion.
This Rancaguina at heart has a lot of goals to meet in the land of OBAMA.
